TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s police arrested a gunman who opened fire near the nation’s parliament in the central part of the capital, Tehran, state media reported on Tuesday.The official IRNA news agency said police disarmed the man, who was carrying a shotgun. No one was injured. The report did not say when the incident took place.The parliament held an open session on Tuesday. PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) — The number of people killed when an illegal gold mine collapsed in Suriname rose to 14 on Tuesday, with seven others missing in what is considered the South American country’s worst mining accident.Rescue crews combed through mounds of earth in hopes of finding survivors as the government launched an investigation into the deadly incident that occurred Monday in the country’s remote southern region.“We are shocked and offer our condolences to the relatives,” President Chandrikapersad Santokhi said during a short, televised speech.He said the incident occurred in an area where a gold vein was previously discovered, attracting large groups of illegal miners.Zijin Mining, a company that operates a legal gold mine in the area, had been meeting with the government just hours before the incident to find solutions to illegal mining at the concession of its subsidiary, Rosebel Goldmines N.V.Zijin issued a statement on Monday saying it has “repeatedly emphasized t...

LONDON (AP) — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was greeted by Britain’s King Charles III and a military honor guard on Tuesday at the start of a state visit aimed at strengthening trade and defense ties between the two countries.The U.K. government hopes the Korean leader’s formal three-day visit will help cement an “ Indo-Pacific tilt ” in its foreign and trade policy.The king and Queen Camilla greeted Yoon and first lady Kim Keon Hee at Horse Guards Parade, a military parade ground in central London. Oak Park extends migrant housing emergency funds

OAK PARK, Ill. — Oak Park will use $500,000 of unspent federal funds to help offset the cost of housing migrants in the village.The final amount, however, is half of what was originally proposed.As in most communities and neighborhoods around the city, how best to handle the cost of migrants brought out people on both sides of the issue. The vote came after several hours of debate.In the end, the village did approve $500,000 to be spent on the growing cost of providing emergency care for about 160 asylum seekers in Oak Park — which was a compromise after some trustees expressed reservations about approving $1 million.The village also extended it's emergency declarations from December for an additonal 60 days, that should get the village through the cold winter months.The money is coming from unspent federal pandemic money.
