It’s been five seasons since the Minnetonka Skippers were last at the state tournament.They won the Class 2A title that year. And Thursday night, junior John Stout made sure this year’s squad kept their chances to repeat that feat alive.Stout scored the winning goal on a long shot with 39.4 left in overtime as top-seeded Minnetonka held off unseeded Hill-Murray 4-3 in a Class 2A state quarterfinal matchup at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.The Skippers (27-2-0) advance to a semifinal matchup against the winner of Thursday night’s late quarterfinal between No. 4 seed Andover and No. 5 seed Lakeville South.The Pioneers (14-14-1) will play in the consolation semifinals at noon at 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis against the Andover/Lakeville South loser.Hill-Murray was back at state for the fourth straight season, but the Pioneers were only the No. 3 seed in the Section 4-2A playoffs and had lost to the Skippers 5-0 when the two teams met in the regular season on Jan. 5.Nevertheless,...

Como Zoo’s oldest giraffe died Thursday at 23, officials said.Daisy, a Como resident for two decades and the matriarch of the zoo’s giraffe herd, had long suffered from degenerative arthritis, and veterinary staffers made the decision to euthanize her “after exhaustive discussions,” according to a news release issued by Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.Daisy came to Como as a 3-year-old in 2002 from the San Diego Wild Animal Park as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan Program, which facilitates transfers of breeding animals among accredited facilities to support population and biodiversity objectives, its website says.Daisy gave birth to eight calves over the course of her life, many of which now live at AZA-accredited zoos across the country, the Como news release said.“Daisy was a strong, beautiful matriarch — quick to judge and slow to accept her human coworkers” Senior Zookeeper Jill Erzar said in the release. “S...

Man arrested for allegedly drugging, sexually assaulting woman in West Hollywood

(KTLA)A 28-year-old pilot was injured after her plane flipped upside down at Van Nuys Airport on Thursday afternoon.The Cessna 172 overturned into a safety area near runway 15 Left around 4:15 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.The female pilot, who was the only occupant on board, was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The airport remained operational as the accident was investigated.

It’s official: San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson is having the best season of his career, at least statistically.Karlsson scored his 20th goal of the season at the 10:23 mark of the first period Thursday against the St. Louis Blues, giving him his 83rd point of the year, one more than his previous career-best of 82 set during the 2015-16 season when he was with the Ottawa Senators.The goal also tied Karlsson with Brent Burns for the most points ever recorded in a season by a Sharks defenseman. Burns had 83 points for the Sharks in 2018-19 when they were the second-highest-scoring team in the NHL with 289 goals.Karlsson’s 83 points are now tied for second-most in NHL history by a defenseman age 32 or older. Ray Bourque had 91 in his age-33 season in 1993-94, and Burns was 34 when he finished his 83-point season.
