NEW YORK (AP) — Two apologetic lawyers responding to an angry judge blamed ChatGPT Thursday for tricking them into including fictitious legal research in a court filing.Attorneys Steven A. Schwartz and Peter LoDuca are facing possible punishment over a filing in a lawsuit against an airline that included references to past court cases that Schwartz thought were real, but were actually invented by the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot.Schwartz explained that he used the groundbreaking program as he hunted for legal precedents supporting a client’s case against the Colombian airline Avianca for an injury incurred on a 2019 flight.The chatbot, which has fascinated the world with its production of essay-like answers to prompts from users, suggested several cases involving aviation mishaps that Schwartz hadn’t been able to find through usual methods used at his law firm.The problem was, several of those cases weren’t real or involved airlines that didn’t exist.Sch...

DENVER (KDVR) — Residents in Lyons were warned Thursday to prepare to evacuate because of possible floods within the next 72 hours.Overnight, St. Vrain Creek reached a flow rate just below the threshold for likely flooding, according to the town of Lyons. No hazardous materials were found Thursday after an emergency response at a thrift store in Jamaica Plain, Boston police said. Crews initially responded to the Boomerangs on Centre Street Thursday evening after Boston police said a store employee called 911 saying they received a donated item that they believed could have continued something hazardous. While some personnel wearing yellow hazmat suits were later seen inside the shop, they were, at one point, standing alongside other officers who were not wearing the same protective gear. The scene had cleared as of around 9:45 p.m., with police saying crews determined the item in question did not pose a threat.

County's homeless population up 22% since last year

SAN DIEGO -- A local organization is continuing its federal requirement in counting people experiencing homelessness. The Regional Task Force on Homelessness released a staggering set of numbers for San Diego County.For the first time, the task force is reaching people experiencing homelessness on Caltrans property. This led them to find 661 more people. There was a 22% increase in homelessness in the San Diego region from the previous count in 2022.The task force conducted the count. Their CEO, Tamera Kohler, said the count will hopefully develop better policies and procedures for people without a home. There are faces behind the numbers. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, said Thursday he intends to veto a package of bills passed by the GOP-dominated legislature that targets the LGBTQ+ community, including a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors and the state’s version of a “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Edwards has said throughout the legislative session, which ended Thursday, that he opposes the series of LGBTQ+ bills. If Edwards blocks the bills, lawmakers can convene for a veto session.
