High surf advisories remain in some parts of California, as ocean conditions begin to calm

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — Southern California’s Ventura County issued a temporary evacuation warning Saturday for some coastal residents due to high surf that pounded the West Coast this week but has begun to calm down. County officials warned that powerful waves, expected to reach up to 20 feet (6 meters) high, were forecast near a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, and the fire department told people to avoid coastal areas. 2 injured in early-morning shooting in Wrigleyville

Police search for 17-year-old boy missing for nearly a month

CHICAGO — Police say a search is underway for a teen boy who has been missing for nearly a month. According to Chicago police, officers are searching for 17-year-old Zion Alvarez, who has been missing since Dec. 1.  Thieves target victims trying to purchase game consoles advertised on social media Officers say Alvarez was last seen in the 6800 block of South Washtenaw Avenue in Chicago Lawn.Police say the teen boy, who has black hair and brown eyes, stands 5-foot-11 and weighs around 115 pounds.According to police, Alvarez was last seen wearing a black coat, a black Polo shirt and khaki pants, but he may now be wearing a white coat.  $777,777 winning scratch-off ticket sold at Chicago gas station Anyone with information on the whereabouts of 17-year-old Zion Alvarez is asked to call CPD Area 1 SVU at 312-747-8380. Tips for police can also be filed at CPDtip.com. Metro brings back Fill-a-Bus campaign to curb hunger across DC area

Metro’s Fill-a-Bus campaign is back for a sixth year, campaigning to drive out hunger and food insecurities in the D.C. region.The Capital Area Food Bank says 1 in 3 people across the D.C. area faces hunger year-round. This season, the program hopes to help stem some of those challenges.“Please join us in the New Year by giving to the Capital Area Food Bank to help families with food insecurities,” Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke said in a news release. “We often say that Metro is the life blood of the community by getting people around the region, and the Fill-A-Bus campaign is another way that we can serve our neighbors.”Metro will place buses at sites around the region, including locations like the Anacostia Station on Howard Rd, the Friendship Heights Station and the Pentagon City Station through the beginning of 2024.
